Jaeil, an A-rank “Backsplash” Esper, lives in a perilous state, unable to find a Guide compatible with him. Due to a past incident, he doesn’t trust people easily and avoids all physical contact, even with Guides.
In such dire conditions, Jaeil, who has little lingering attachment to the world and pushes himself to his limits, one day hears a piece of news. It’s that a new A-rank Backsplash Guide will be coming to the center. However, that guide, Seunghyun, is from District 13, has received no education, and doesn’t even know how to perform Guiding!?

On the surface, it was a handshake, but holding hands was the most basic ritual for exchanging energy with one another. This, however, was as far as Jaeil was willing to play along with Daniel’s fuss. All he wanted was to catch up on much-needed sleep. Frankly, he didn’t care about the matching rates or the A-rank Guides. At best, this person would just be one of the countless guides who had passed through his life over the past seven years, and one of many more to come.
Jaeil was withered and severely exhausted, but no one knew his condition. The state only ever raved about his exceptional abilities, assigning him Guiding sessions as if they were merely charging a battery. Expectations, disappointment, excitement—all his emotions had long been depleted. Having realized through futile time that things were only slightly better or slightly worse, he found this whole process to be nothing but a waste of time.
The man, who had been staring at the offered hand, slowly lifted his head. He seemed to be an A-rank guide after all, reacting with sharp sensitivity even to the risk of an energy surge that wasn’t particularly high. Following his slow gaze, a sharp nose, long eyelashes for a man, and a clear complexion came into view one by one. As emotions began to flicker across the man’s face, Jaeil’s eyelids slowly lowered and then rose again.

Jaeil observed the man’s face dispassionately, thinking he looked as perfectly sculpted as a peeled chestnut.
The man, on the other hand, stared at Jaeil as if he’d just seen a ghost. Starting with a sharp intake of breath with wide, startled eyes, he showed a variety of reactions with each passing second. First came the startled horror, then he clamped a hand over his mouth, and finally, he actually gagged.
“Urk.”
It was, without a doubt, the single most absurd greeting he had ever received from a Guide.
