    The Wife’s Secret

    “Tell me why we can’t.”

After the afternoon meeting was over, YeonJung was called to SeonJae’s office. One year had passed since she had officially become a full-time employee at his company. A contract had been drafted, and she was even signed onto the employee’s health insurance program. Therefore, he was basically her boss when it came to her work.

Six months had passed since they’d moved into a more spacious office building. It was only a single-story building, but they purchased it and renovated it to suit their company. While the company had started off with five employees, the number now reached twenty. In the back, YeonJung had installed flower beds and large slabs of logs turned into tables for the break area. When the weather was nice, they’d even take their clients outside to have their meetings there. It was the perfect environment for her work.

“So why are you saying we can’t?”

YeonJung gazed at SeonJae, who sat with his legs crossed behind his desk. She let out a sigh. Whenever she saw his stiff jaw and the scowl in his brow, she was reminded anew that this man’s temper had never died. He had merely been hiding it. He almost looked like the same man she had met that fateful night long ago. YeonJung began to move her hand as she hid her smile.

‘SeonJae-ssi, we’re at the office right now. Let’s discuss this when we get home.’

She signed to him, but SeonJae still looked displeased.

“I consider my family issues to be more important than my work issues. I need to know why my wife is acting this way.”

When he said ‘wife’, that meant he was not going to back down. Whenever there was a serious conflict between them, he would always use that word in his argument.

‘I wish my wife would know how much she’s worrying her husband.’

‘Everything I do is for my wife. If we’re fighting because of something as trivial as work, then I might as well just close my business.’

‘The approval is postponed. I don’t like it when my wife is tired.’

“Why can’t we? You said you wanted to go to Africa. That’s why we should go this time. That’s what vacation days are for. If we don’t go now, there might not be another opportunity to take a vacation until next year.”

He wasn’t wrong. If they were to take some time off, the best time would be to go during the wedding off-season of winter. She knew he was doing this because he was sorry. They had been drowning in work since last spring until this summer.

For their honeymoon, they had flown to the other side of the globe to go scuba diving. For their 1-year anniversary, they paraglided in the sky. For a man who had a phobia of every kind of adrenaline-inducing activity, SeonJae would always tag along and do everything with her.

At one point, she mentioned that she’d like to see the sprinting cheetahs in the national parks of Kenya, so he kept that in mind and asked her to go on a trip to Africa with him. She understood that this was all coming from a sweet place. However, he had suddenly given Team Leader Ahn notice that he’d be taking three months off next month during the morning meeting. There were many things they needed to prepare in order to go on an African vacation. They needed to take care of all the necessary vaccinations, and the flights were too long.

“Just three months ago, you said you wanted to see all the sights in National Geographic. Your eyes were sparkling. You said that the black panther and I looked the same, so you wanted to see it in person. So why the sudden change? Why do you hate it now?”

This was true. The moment she saw the glossy, black fur of the black panther as it ran on TV, she cried out, ‘It’s Min SeonJae!’

    “I’m not sah-ying we shouldn’t go on ah trip…”

She wasn’t sure what she should say, but his eyes were fixed on her as he focused on every minute detail of her expression.

“Have you grown tired of me, YeonJung?”

My god. Although he spoke so arrogantly, his trembling lips clearly betrayed his apprehension. They had been married for two years now. She knew exactly how he felt just by looking at his expression. And he was the same. YeonJung quickly shook her head.

“Is it because you’re tired of being with me? I heard women also get into a phase where they get bored of their marriage. Is that what’s happening?”

SeonJae gazed at her with a grave expression. He was being dead serious right now. He was scared that he’d been too negligent with her. YeonJung couldn’t hide the shock from her face.

    “Seon…”

“Lately, you haven’t been trying to approach me. You even pushed me away last night. And you stared blankly into space during the meeting today.”

His fingers began to tap against the surface of the mahogany desk. SeonJae chewed on his lips as he tried to organize his thoughts. Seeing this, YeonJung felt her skin grow damp with cold sweat.

‘I better nip this in the bud.’

She wanted to discuss this slowly with him at home, but at this rate, SeonJae would come to even more preposterous conclusions. YeonJung glanced behind her.

She saw all the employees outside quickly look away from the CEO’s office and fix their eyes back on their desks. This place wasn’t the best to have such a private conversation. She felt that she’d be able to bring up the topic naturally if they went outside for a walk.

    “SeonJae-shi…”

When she turned her head back to him, she found that the SeonJae who had been sitting at his desk was now right in front of her. Not being able to hear was so uncomfortable. She wasn’t able to avoid her husband’s stubborn lips pressing down on her own.

    “Hm…”

His hand stretched out and closed the blinds, but it was too late. The employees outside had probably already seen their display of affection. YeonJung’s legs went limp due to the embarrassment.

    “Don’t make me anxious, YeonJung.”

SeonJae pulled away for a moment before bringing her even closer and deepening their kiss. When he found her shy tongue, he tangled his tongue with hers and continued to suck her mouth until she grew damp between her legs. Only then did he pull away and look down at her.

What woman in the world could think of something else as she was kissed like this? As they both panted for breath, he slowly stroked her wet lips with his thumb.

“I still like you so much that a kiss won’t satisfy me. I want to mess you up right here, right now. I’m already this hard for you…”

She knew he was telling the truth. The front of his pants was bulging. However, the one who seemed to be embarrassed wasn’t SeonJae. It was her.

    “It’s not like ‘dat, SeonJae-shi.”

    “What isn’t it like?”

    “I’m not… tired of yoo.”

Whenever she spoke to him in a whimpering voice, his eyes would narrow as he stared at her like a man bewitched. Just like now. He grabbed her hand and interlocked their fingers.

“Did you think I didn’t notice your strange behavior?”

When she heard his words, her eyes widened as she blinked up at him. SeonJae hesitated before opening his mouth once again. Between the buttons of his fitted shirt, she could see his chest rise up and down with every breath.

“One week ago, you went out to meet with a client, and you returned after four hours. I couldn’t get in contact with you. I sent you a text asking where you were, and you only replied after a long time had already passed. Well, I can let that much go. You could have been busy. Yesterday, you suddenly told me you didn’t feel like eating, so we cancelled that restaurant reservation. I can endure that much. But now you’re saying you don’t want to go on our 2-year anniversary trip. How am I supposed to react to that?”

His angry expression slowly transformed into one of hurt. YeonJung’s heart twinged. She couldn’t let him misunderstand any longer. She stretched out both her hands and wrapped them around his face.

    “I’m soh-rry.”

    “Don’t apologize.”

His eyes seemed a bit relieved, but it was only for a moment.

    “It’s ah miss-understanding, SeonJae-shi. I’m soh-rry…”

“I told you not to apologize. That’s not what I want from you. I want to know why you’re acting like this these days. Why have you been avoiding me?”

YeonJung decided to use her special move.

    “I love yoo, SeonJae-shi.”

“…You think I’ll just get over this if you say that, don’t you?”

She gently stroked his cheek as if she were consoling a sulking child. She felt his body tense up. SeonJae let out a hot breath.

“…Okay, I’ll hear the reason later. Since you said you love me, let’s just share our love here for now.”

SeonJae stuck his body to hers as he quickly murmured, but she couldn’t understand him. But when she saw him unbuckle his pants and lower the zipper, she realized what was happening.

    “SeonJae… SeonJae-shi…”

    “Why, you don’t want to?”

As he let out a scorching breath, he looked into her eyes. YeonJung thought about this for a moment. If she pushed him away right now, she thought his misunderstanding would get worse. As she watched him lift up her flared skirt and pull her underwear down her legs, her heart skipped a beat.

    “No, I wah-nt to… but… what if someone sees…”

“No one will come in. They don’t want to deal with the consequences.”

He dragged her over to the sofa in a corner of the office. SeonJae sat down on the sofa and placed her on his lap. He checked to see if she was wet from behind. When he found what he was looking for, his face finally relaxed.

    “Let me in.”

His hardness seemed to cry out from being ignored for the past few days as it softly rubbed against her entrance. SeonJae couldn’t take it anymore and began to enter her.

    “Aah… I love you, YeonJung. I love you…”

As he lowered her onto him, he searched for her breasts. SeonJae didn’t finish very easily, almost as if he wanted compensation for enduring it for so long. He clung to her for a long time. She thought they’d finish up quickly, but by the time they were done, most of the afternoon had passed. When YeonJung pleaded with him as she trembled, SeonJae finally pulled away reluctantly.

Before YeonJung closed the door, she looked at him. She saw SeonJae staring at her with such loving eyes. She slowly moved her hands.

    “……”

SeonJae’s Adam’s apple bobbed up and down as he fixed his eyes on her hands. She watched him nervously.

    “Say it again.”

YeonJung’s hands moved gracefully as she repeated herself. Then she touched her belly. A blush crept up her cheeks. When she saw SeonJae’s eyes widen, she quickly closed the door and exited the office.

After getting over her fear of having a child, she stopped taking any contraceptives. However, making a baby was a lot harder than she thought. She thought they’d make one easily, but it didn’t come. She felt like it was punishment for having such horrible thoughts in the past.

After they got married, SeonJae never brought up the topic of pregnancy or having a child. She felt even more nervous because she knew he was doing it out of consideration for her. Her feet slightly trembled as she walked back to her desk.

    ‘Here. A child. Yours. Mine.’

He had definitely understood her sign language. She definitely saw his face turn into one of shock. Rather than telling him the news, she was more anxious about his reaction. She wasn’t sure why. Ba-dump, ba-dump. Her heart raced painfully inside her chest.

    “Uh!”

A short exclamation burst out of her lips when she felt someone’s presence behind her. SeonJae had run out of his office and embraced her from behind.

“Is that why? That’s why… That’s why you did that?”

He whispered into her ear, but she couldn’t hear him. However, she realized that his reaction wasn’t bad at all and felt relieved.

    “Haagh!”

SeonJae slipped his arm behind her thighs and lifted her up. A louder cry burst out of YeonJung’s lips. Once she was in his sturdy arms, she looked at him with bewildered eyes as she bit her lips.

She saw him murmur something with his trembling lips, and the employees in the office burst out of their seats with open mouths. She saw papers flying all over the place. Someone began to clap while another laughed as they said their congratulations. Amidst all this chaos, YeonJung merely held on tight to SeonJae’s neck.

No one had to tell her for her to realize what was going on. SeonJae was so happy right now, and she knew better than anyone that he would never let her go. And she felt the safest when she was in his arms as well.

“Even when the child is born, you’re still my number one, Lee YeonJung.”

SeonJae murmured as he carried her away. They were in the garden behind the office building. They laughed underneath the blinding sunlight. YeonJung gazed at him. Even if the path before them was full of ups and downs, this man would always change her fears into excitement. She’d bet her life on it.

    ‘I love you, SeonJae-ssi.’

She pressed her ear to his chest. She was enveloped in his warmth. She could feel his heartbeats traveling from his chest to her head. With her still in his arms, SeonJae sat down on a bench. YeonJung opened her eyes. SeonJae was gazing at her with watery eyes as he laughed. She laughed with him. It was a warm, sunny, autumn day.
