    Chapter 32. Waves

After eating, Bo-yeon succeeded in pinpointing the mutant’s location.

“Huh? This one’s really unique… The head looks like a toad, and the mouth and jaw resemble a shark’s.”

Bo-yeon showed the remote control screen to Do-kyung.

The mutant had a short body with stunted limbs, and its head was overwhelmingly large. It was hard to understand how such a small body could support such a massive head.

Its forehead was wide like a bird’s, and its nose pointed upward. The lower half of its face stretched out horizontally.

The mutant lay on the floor with its eyes closed and its mouth wide open, revealing long, sharp teeth like spears. From its physical features alone, it was clear that its jaw strength was formidable.

Rumble. Rumble. The mutant remained still, eyes shut, as if sleeping.

“Doesn’t it look like he’s sleeping?”

Bo-yeon said, surprised by the strange phenomenon.

    “Clean up.”

At Do-kyung’s instruction, the trio quickly packed up the tent. They moved with urgency, aware that he might leave them behind, something he had done before.

Two large SUVs rolled toward the mutant.

“Hmmm? Don’t you smell something… sweet?”

Bo-yeon, sitting in the passenger seat, craned her neck and pressed her face against the window.

    “Smell?”

    Do-kyung didn’t seem to agree.

I want to smell more. Bo-yeon felt a vague curiosity and rolled down the window. A sweet scent wafted in with the wind, filling the air around them.

    “Ah… ngh, good….”

    Bo-yeon’s cheeks flushed brightly.

Just then, the SUV that had been following Do-kyung’s car suddenly changed lanes and sped past them.

The car window was wide open. The trio accelerated, racing toward the mutant.

Do-kyung stopped the car, rolled up the window, and lightly slapped Bo-yeon on the cheek.

    “Ah!”

Bo-yeon, who had been staring dazedly, snapped her eyes wide open.

    “Uh… Uh…?”

She blinked rapidly, shaking her head in confusion.

“No, it’s like those insect-eating carnivorous plants, like Nepenthes or Venus flytraps. They open their mouths wide and wait for prey to come close. They even release a scent to attract bugs… It felt just like that… They want to get close…”

    “Doesn’t it hurt?”

    “Yes… ..”

While Do-kyung checked Bo-yeon’s forehead to see if she had a fever, the trio got out of the car.

“Huh? Uh, those guys are running?”

Among them was Sung-sik, who seemed to disregard the Hippocratic Oath1, yet was still a doctor. Do-kyung figured he’d need to keep him alive just in case.

    “Lock the door.”

    Oppa, are you okay…!”

Do-kyung cut off Bo-yeon’s words and stepped out, slamming the door behind him. After glancing at Bo-yeon, who was muttering to herself, he quietly locked the door and covered his nose with his sleeve.

With the bag containing the weapons in hand, Do-kyung made his way toward the mutant. He was close enough now to check on Bo-yeon’s condition.

    “Haheuk, urgh…!”

    “Haahkk! Hahkk!”

    “Kurgh, heuk, more…!”

Do-kyung’s face twisted into an icy, almost disgusted expression when he spotted the trio. His face rarely betrayed emotion, but this time, it was hard to hide his distaste.

    “……”

The trio that came out were squirming, masturbating with their obscene genitals. The closer they got to the mutant, the stronger its aphrodisiac properties seemed to be.

Do-kyung felt disgusted and his will to kill them surged when he saw their genitals dripping with semen. Thankfully, they were hidden by the trees. If Bo-yeon could see them, he would have just killed them.

The trio crawled toward the mutant, moving slowly like caterpillars. They were still alive only because of their slow pace.

If a human were nearby, the mutant would have gone into a frenzy. But this one had a lazy nature—it closed its eyes as if sleeping, mouth wide open, waiting for them to approach.

With its disproportionate body, the mutant seemed to have chosen to lie still rather than move.

Do-kyung tossed a grenade into the mutant’s mouth.

Boom! It didn’t look that hard on the outside, but the inside of its mouth was surprisingly fine even after eating the grenade.

It seems that its mouth was strong enough to protect its brain.

    “Kwaaaaaaaah!”

The mutant, now awake, was no longer docile. It let out a strange noise and charged toward Do-kyung, blood dripping from its mouth.

Do-kyung threw another grenade into the mutant’s massive mouth. But as it pushed the grenade away with its tongue, it became clear that this method wouldn’t work.

He tried shooting at the roof of its mouth, but the bullets didn’t penetrate properly. The thickness of its skull and skin was substantial. The same was true for its forehead and neck.

Though a bullet lodged in the mutant’s eyeball, it seemed to cause little damage, as the facial structure was too disconnected from the brain to be affected.

    “Kak! Gikk! Kiig!”

Planning to block the mouth first, he threw a rock at it, but the mutant crushed it with its sharp teeth.

    “Hah….”

Do-kyung knew he had to fight in close combat. He would be covered in blood, but there was no other choice.

The mutant crawled around blindly, searching for him. Do-kyung kicked its back, pinning it to the ground. With swift movement, he raised his military knife, ready to plunge it into the mutant’s neck.

    “Crunch! Kak!”

Drrrkk! With a strange sound, the mutant’s head spun 180 degrees. It let out a human-like laugh and lunged at Do-kyung’s arm, its gaping mouth wide open.

Clang! The mutant’s teeth slammed shut, making a harsh metallic sound. Do-kyung quickly leapt back, stomping on the mutant’s jaw before it could open again.

The mutant’s neck snapped, and the crown of its head slammed into the floor.

Bite force refers to the strength of closing the jaws, a different matter from the strength needed to open them. Even animals with powerful bite forces often struggle with jaw-opening strength.

    “Urk! Ugh…?”

“Can’t you do it like before?”

Do-kyung’s eyes furrowed. The pitch-black dagger forcefully cut the mutant’s nape.

Pukkk! The sharp blade dug into the thick skin with a terrible force and tore the neck to shreds.

    Puuk! Puuk! Splurt!

The inside of the mutant was soft. Each time Do-kyung stabbed with his sword, the mutant’s body trembled, fluttering as though it felt no pain. It struggled to stand and grabbed Do-kyung’s arm.

But the struggle didn’t last long. Soon, its neck was ripped clean off. Do-kyung’s arm was also injured, but he showed no sign of concern.

The wounds left by the mutant quickly began to heal, and a red fog shimmered, seeping into Do-kyung’s body.

    “…….”

A realization dawned on Do-kyung. This mutant’s ability was a pheromone that seduced and aroused its opponents, but it had no effect on those as powerful as him.

    ‘Ah… ngh, good….’

Do-kyung thought of Bo-yeon, who had been panting after smelling the mutant’s pheromone.

It seemed like it could be used to torment her. The thought was interesting enough that he wanted Bo-yeon to do something deserving of punishment.

No, he simply wanted to find fault with her. After finishing off his prey, Do-kyung returned to the car. The trio, now regaining their senses, hesitantly climbed back in.

Bo-yeon rolled down the window and handed him a wet towel.

    “Are you okay?”

    “Hm.”

Do-kyung was roughly wiping the blood from his face and hands when small shadows passed overhead, briefly darkening the sky.

    “A flock of birds…”

A flock of birds, at least a hundred strong, flew in unison. It was a sight that felt both wondrous and ominous, the kind of spectacle one might witness just before a disaster.

    “…….”

Thud. Thud. Thud. Do-kyung sensed something approaching. There were a lot of them. People?

The shadows, which had been faintly visible at the end of the sloping road, were now staggering toward them. When they spotted people, they suddenly quickened their pace.

“Are you trying to scare me, playing a prank…?”

Bo-yeon asked in a trembling voice, wondering if Do-kyung was messing with her again by reducing the deterrent range.

But Do-kyung’s face was more serious than ever.

    “Fasten your seatbelt!”

Do-kyung discarded his blood-soaked towel and climbed into the driver’s seat. As soon as the engine roared to life, he slammed his foot on the accelerator.

Kiiikkk! The tires screeched on the road and started off at a rapid pace.

    “Kreuk! Kreuk!”

The monsters let out strange, guttural sounds as they charged forward at incredible speeds.

In an instant, countless zombies broke through Do-kyung’s deterrent field.

One of the fastest mutants, leaping like a frog, collided with the car, its head slamming into the rear window.

Crash! The glass shattered, and a blood-soaked face turned toward the front seat.

    “Kyakkk!”

Thump! Thump! The eerie sound of teeth clashing was heard within a short distance of Bo-yeon.

Behind the shattered glass, zombies swarmed like a mass of insects.

    It wasn’t just a wave—it was a tsunami.

If they got caught, they would be consumed.
