    Chapter 14. Immunity

    The season changed to winter.

It had been about two months since Bo-yeon and Do-kyung had been together.

    “Uwahhkkk!”

Just as they were about to go out into the yard, they heard a scream.

    “It’s a human voice…!”

Bo-yeon whispered urgently, but Do-kyung’s expression remained indifferent, as if he didn’t really want to help. She knew he wasn’t the type to step forward and assist others.

When she followed him on his hunts with her drone, she saw him ignore the other survivors. She couldn’t say anything—there was no reason for him to risk his life for anyone else.

But this time, Bo-yeon couldn’t ignore the screams right in front of her. She thought she could use her drone to draw the attention of one or two zombies.

Fortunately or unfortunately, the commotion was growing closer fast enough that Do-kyung couldn’t simply ignore it. Bo-yeon’s face turned pale as she looked over the wall.

    “Sang-ji’s been caught!”

    “It’s too late, run!”

The one chasing the crowd was a mutant. Its muscles bulged, like the side effect of steroids, and it resembled a giant green monster from a movie. It was clearly massive—at least 3 meters tall.

It grabbed whatever it came across, whether human or zombie, and tore into their flesh. Now, it had set its sights on a human. People fled, mingling with the zombies in a desperate attempt to escape.

What was surprising was that the normal zombies didn’t attack them.

    They were immune.

Do-kyung, perhaps intrigued by the unusual situation, vaulted over the wall with a machine gun in hand. He shot at the mutant first, but the bullets didn’t land properly.

The mutant charged toward him, displaying some level of intelligence.

Do-kyung paid it no mind, focusing instead on shooting the normal zombies. Bo-yeon quickly realized he was doing this for her safety.

The normal zombies had a habit of avoiding the mutants, so there weren’t many left. They were quickly taken care of by Do-kyung.

    “W-who…!”

The fleeing immunes watched Do-kyung with surprised eyes. It seemed that not all immunes possessed the same power as he did.

Do-kyung silently reached out to grab the tomahawk of the man in front of him. With surprising ease, he yanked it away, causing the man to lose his weapon.

The axe, once intended for throwing, flew through the air as it had been designed to.

Whack! The axe, which had spun at incredible speed, was lodged in the nape of the mutant’s neck.

    “Kreuaaaaaaah!”

The mutant let out a deafening roar as it pulled the axe from its neck. The sound was so intense it felt like Bo-yeon’s eardrums were going to burst.

She watched as the zombies, hiding nearby, scattered like startled animals. Unable to bear the noise any longer, Bo-yeon quickly covered her ears.

    Rumble!

Do-kyung frowned as he observed the wound on the mutant’s neck. The nape had been shot.

The machine gun’s rapid fire had torn through the thick flesh, shredding it to pieces and weakening the support of its head. Soon, with a heavy thud, the mutant’s head dropped to the floor.

    “……”

    “……”

Silence descended over the once chaotic area. It had taken Do-kyung less than a minute to subdue the mutant. His skill was almost divine, with a genius sense of combat that was undeniable.

The situation was so chaotic that no one else seemed to notice, but Bo-yeon clearly saw the red fog leaking from the mutant’s head, swirling only around Do-kyung before seeping into him.

    “Uheuk!”

The one who broke the silence was the man the mutant had hit. His right arm was torn off just below his shoulder.

    “Hyun-woo Hyung1!”

    “Don’t, don’t shoot! We’re immune…!”

The man’s colleagues quickly surrounded and defended him, likely thinking Do-kyung might use his gun on him. However, Bo-yeon had a different thought.

    “……”

The pitch-black eyes, filled with faint interest, gave her an unsettling feeling. Was Do-kyung wondering whether the immune who had been bitten by the mutant would get infected?

The man writhed in pain, clutching his arm where the mutant had bitten him.

Grrr. Bo-yeon suddenly heard a growl. The man’s face, contorted with pain as he held his arm, began to show red blood vessels. His eyes turned red, and in an instant, he bit the colleague who had been trying to help him.

    “Ahhl!”

A painful scream rang out. The situation changed suddenly.

    “Damn it! Park Hyun-woo!”

    “Give up! He’s infected!”

“Fuck, what happened…. Wasn’t the immune one okay?”

“What about Ji-won? Ji-won is infected too?”

    “I, I’m not! I’m okay!”

Bang! A single gunshot ended the commotion. The head of the man whose right arm was torn off exploded.

    It was Do-kyung’s doing.

The next person Do-kyung pointed his gun at was the man called ‘Ji-won’.

    “N-no! Not me! No!”

The man, Ji-won, shook his head, screaming in agony. Despite the commotion, the zombies should have been drawn to the sound, but the area remained eerily quiet, with only Ji-won’s voice piercing the silence. It seemed the scream the mutant had made before dying might have scared them off.

    “Look, look! I’m immune…!”

Ji-won rolled up his sleeves to show the bite marks that looked like they had been there a long time ago.

    “Everyone, listen to me!”

At Ji-won’s urging, the middle-aged man, who seemed to be the oldest in the group, stepped forward.

“Zombies are strong enough to chew on a person’s bones, but they usually don’t bite a living person too hard. The goal isn’t to eat humans, but to infect them. Do you see the sharp fangs zombies have? When an immune person is bitten by a zombie, an excessive inflammatory reaction occurs, leaving a scar. Ji-won here is an immune person.”

Leaves a scar? Bo-yeon stared blankly at Do-kyung. The two had been physically involved during sex. She couldn’t help but notice his body, even if she didn’t intend to.

There were no bite marks on him. But Bo-yeon kept her mouth shut, not feeling it was right to discuss such things in front of others.

As time passed, Ji-won showed no signs of infection. He only groaned in pain.

    “Where did you come from?”

Do-kyung asked the middle-aged man, their eyes locking in a tense exchange. When they didn’t answer right away, Bo-yeon felt a rush of anxiety.

Do-kyung’s expression remained unchanged, but his gun stayed pointed at them. Seeing this, Bo-yeon felt the weight of the situation—it was rapidly spiraling into something very dangerous.

    “Wait a minute!”

Bo-yeon watched nervously, feeling like she was waiting for a time bomb to go off. Finally, unable to bear the tension any longer, she kicked open the front door and ran outside.

It had been a long time since she had ventured out through the yard. Do-kyung had warned her not to climb over the wall, and Bo-yeon had always obeyed, knowing it was for her own safety.

“I told you not to come out.”

As Bo-yeon stepped outside, Do-kyung’s attention snapped to her. He lowered his gun, his eyes narrowing with a fierce glare. It was clear he was angry—angry because she hadn’t listened to him.

    “Please, don’t do that… They’re humans. A human…”

Bo-yeon felt a sudden wave of fear, but she quickly grabbed Do-kyung’s arm, holding onto it tightly. It was only then that the middle-aged man, sensing the tension, spoke up.

    “We are not suspicious people…”

Bo-yeon, still gripping Do-kyung’s arm, joined in, trying to ease the situation.

“Right now, Seoul is… a zombie city. The infection spread so quickly that seventy to eighty percent of the population turned into zombies. Those of us who survived are trying to escape Seoul. In all this chaos, several immune people have appeared, so… I understand how it might look suspicious from your perspective.”

She spoke as gently as possible, trying to bridge the gap with the information she’d heard from Do-kyung, hoping it would calm the situation down.

    Hic!

Bo-yeon glanced up at Do-kyung, uncertain whether this was the right course of action, and nearly screamed. His gaze was terrifying.

It wasn’t just a gaze—it was a glare laced with murderous intent. Despite the intensity of his stare, Do-kyung didn’t push Bo-yeon away, who remained frozen like a mouse caught in front of a cat.

    “We just ran to Seoul!”

    “Lee Ji-won!”

At that moment, a clash of opinions erupted between them.

“I’ll tell you everything, just let me go. I was bitten earlier, and I thought I’d be infected…”

    “Go on.”

“…There’s a dangerous group that experiments on people with immunity. They blindfolded me and brought me here. All I know is that it’s somewhere in Gyeonggi-do. When the incident happened, they ran away, risking their lives, because they didn’t want to die.”

Human experimentation? In modern times, it’s a concept that’s almost forgotten, as despised as cannibalism.

Their physical appearance was unsettling. Their faces were haggard from exhaustion, perhaps from being chased, and they reeked of sweat and blood, having not washed in a long time.

While Bo-yeon was shocked by the horrific sight, Do-kyung seemed intrigued.

“What were the results of the experiment?”

    “……”

His eyes, which had been filled with anxiety, were now burning with rage. Even though there were more people around, he couldn’t easily get angry, having witnessed Do-kyung’s power.

    “I don’t know.”

Ji-won grumbled, sticking out his lips. But Do-kyung didn’t seem to believe him.

    “Koheok!”

Suddenly, a hand reached out and grabbed Ji-won’s neck. It was the hand opposite the one Bo-yeon was holding onto.

If Bo-yeon hadn’t been clinging to the hand holding the gun with all her strength, he might have shot him. Do-kyung showed no emotion, even as he gripped someone’s neck.

“Let go, let go! Don’t do that, please…!”

    Bo-yeon desperately pleaded.

    “Fuck… Retreat!”

What was shocking was that as soon as Do-kyung grabbed Ji-won by the neck, the other three men foolishly abandoned their comrade and tried to flee.

Do-kyung kicked Ji-won in the stomach and threw him to the floor. He couldn’t even scream properly, only groaning as if he were about to vomit his intestines.

The shock must have been severe. Do-kyung was seen pulling a gun from his waistband.

    “It’s dangerous if you move!”

Bo-yeon screamed in terror, but they didn’t listen to her.

    Bang! A gunshot rang out.
