    Chapter 6. A Secret Contract

After washing his hands and coming out, Girion seemed a little surprised to see her standing near the bathroom. It was as if he thought she would just wander off. When Bonida gave him a slightly annoyed look, he smiled and said, “From now on, wait over there. There’s no need to stand at the entrance.”

Looking in the direction he pointed, Bonida saw an arch-shaped window decorated with roses. The sunlight pouring in through the large window was almost dreamlike. She hadn’t noticed such a beautiful spot, but then again, she hadn’t even thought to look around. Feeling a bit awkward, her face involuntarily scrunched up. Girion chuckled playfully. It was the first time she heard his laugh, and she felt a bit dazed by it. Without much thought, he lightly tapped her nose with his finger, making sure it didn’t hurt, and said,

“I washed my hands because I needed to put medicine on it.”

    “Medicine?”

    “In your mouth.”

Ah, Bonida couldn’t shake off the thought of sounding a bit clueless. There was no real reason for him to apply medicine to her mouth wound, but he had done so without asking. In the brief time she observed him, it became clear that Girion was the type of person who would do whatever he wanted, regardless of others’ opinions. Hadn’t he done the same without hesitation when Milan, the maid, was watching?

After walking for a while, Bonida realized she was retracing her steps. Where was he taking her? Her curiosity was soon answered. As they entered the reception room, an elderly man was sitting there. From the large medicine jar on the empty chair at the table, it seemed he was the doctor Girion had called for. The doctor spoke politely to Girion.

“It doesn’t seem like the Duke is sick. Is it the lady next to you?”

“There’s a wound in her mouth. Please take a look.”

    “I will.”

Girion lightly touched her back and led her to the table. In the meantime, the attending physician was examining various medicines. When Bonida sat down quietly, Girion sat down next to her. The attending physician, who had finished his work, spoke politely to Bonida.

“Then I will take a look inside your mouth. Ah-, would you like to do that?”

“Do you really have to take a look?”

“It’s a wound in her mouth. If you tell me not to take a look, how can I treat it?”

“Well, just do as you always do.”

Girion suddenly interrupted. He crossed his arms and looked at the attending physician, somewhat annoyed by the situation. Despite the absurd situation, the attending physician did a good job of siding with Girion.

“I’ll just take a look at the wound. Then, wouldn’t the treatment be over soon?”

Girion reluctantly nodded, and this time, Bonida froze awkwardly. It was awkward to open her mouth to the unfamiliar attending physician, but it seemed that this situation would end if she received treatment. As Bonida opened her mouth and said, “Ah-,” Girion simply leaned forward, but the air current became tense.

Bonida’s eyes wandered around aimlessly, as if she had shown the attending physician something that she shouldn’t have seen, even though it was for treatment. The attending physician, who had finished the examination with only his eyes, said.

“Your mouth is all messed up. You need to apply ointment.”

“You can give it to me.”

    “Will the Duke apply it?”

“If I don’t, who will? Go now.”

Kyle, the doctor, who had assumed they shared a close relationship given how near she was sitting to Girion, was thoroughly taken aback by his words.

Was it six months ago? Duke Girion had attended a party, and at that time, several young ladies had come to the estate. The duke hadn’t issued a formal invitation; instead, the family he worked with on business had cleverly sent their daughters there.

One of the young ladies was incredibly cunning. She claimed she was feeling dizzy and insisted she couldn’t leave because she needed to rest. At that time, Girion could have easily pretended to call for his personal doctor out of politeness, but he didn’t do so at all. Instead, he told her to get proper rest at home and promptly had her sent off in her carriage.

It was surprising that he called her when her mouth was only slightly injured. Moreover, it wasn’t as though inspecting her mouth would cause any harm, yet he clearly expressed his displeasure.

For Kyle, it was the first time in his career as a doctor that he had never even touched a patient’s hand during an examination. However, he skillfully concealed his feelings and greeted her neatly. The reason he went beyond what was necessary in his words was that he had a strong feeling he would be seeing this lady for a long time.

“I am Kyle, from the Pells family, one of the vassals of the Duke Tefort’s household. The Tefort family has a history of 500 years, and our Pells family has served as their personal doctors for those 500 years.”

“Nice to meet you. I am Bonida Bello.”

Even though she had a bashful expression on her face, she greeted him with a confident voice. Kyle was surprised to see her enter the reception room. Even though he had seen all the beauties of the Kingdom of Esperanza, he couldn’t take his eyes off her. She was truly a rare beauty. It wasn’t an exaggeration to say that she might be the most beautiful woman in the Kingdom of Esperanza.

Just as the introductions were over and Kyle was about to walk toward the reception room door, Girion suddenly pulled Bonida’s chair closer, placing her right in front of him. Without hesitation, he calmly instructed her to open her mouth with an ah.

Bonida, glancing briefly at Kyle, who hadn’t yet left the room, reluctantly opened her mouth. After checking his hand briefly, Girion dabbed some ointment on his finger and carefully applied it to the inside of her mouth.

He was so meticulous and deliberate in his actions that Kyle, who was watching, couldn’t help but swallow dryly. Once Girion finished applying the ointment with surprising tenderness, he withdrew his hand without hesitation and asked.

    “Are you uncomfortable?”

“No, my mouth feels a sudden cool sensation. It’s very refreshing and not sticky at all.”

“Thank goodness. When should I apply the medicine?”

Without even turning around, Girion abruptly asked his question. Caught off guard, Kyle answered, perhaps not knowing that he had still been hesitating.

“Apply it twice a day, morning and evening. Since you’ve applied it now, you can have have a meal in about 10 minutes.”

    “Okay.”

Only then did Kyle finish his task and step out of the reception room. His heart, which he hadn’t even realized was there, sent a heavy signal through his chest. Was this what it felt like to secretly witness the sweet interactions of a handsome couple? Kyle chuckled awkwardly to himself as he walked away.

Girion only turned his full attention to Bonida after Kyle had left. His gaze lingered on her for a long time, causing her to freeze awkwardly. She nervously shifted her eyes to avoid his stare. But then, as if she had made up her mind,  met his gaze again, steady and unwavering.

Girion had never believed in destiny. However, he felt he might start to believe it now.
