    # Prologue

    “Ah, fuck.”

As soon as I pushed open the classroom door, a string of curses escaped my mouth at the unexpected face before me.

Yoon Si-chan, who had turned his head, was staring at me with a blank expression.

Trying to turn back wasn’t an option either—everywhere in the hallway was a scene straight out of hell. Our homeroom teacher, eyes bloodshot, was tearing into the class president’s head with his teeth, while the student council president, missing one of his eyes, dangled from the window. No matter how much I tried to wrap my head around it, the situation was beyond comprehension.

Just this morning, the world was the same miserable mess as always. I crawled out of my cramped, half-basement room, went to a school packed with nothing but guys used my textbook as a pillow during class, and cursed at the cafeteria’s pathetic excuse for a meal—nothing but greens.

I loitered around the school store, stole bread from the nerds, and was smoking in the restroom when it all started.

    “Aaaagh!”

A scream rang out, triggering a chorus of panicked shouts from all directions.

Wondering what the hell was going on, I opened the door—only to see lunatics with twisted necks tearing into someone’s intestines on the floor.

I did whatever it took to survive.

When zombies barged into the restroom, I shoved the bastard who was smoking with me straight into them. While that slow idiot got ripped apart alive, I bolted to the classroom—only to find it already swarming with the undead.

I barely made it out, wielding a broom I had grabbed off the floor as a makeshift weapon. When necessary, I grabbed fleeing students and threw them to the zombies as bait.

Morality? That was never my concern in the first place.

Staying alive was all that mattered.

From the second to the third floor, everything was a bloody mess. Blood splattered everywhere, chaos unfolding at every turn. I barely made it up to the fourth floor and pushed open the door of a seemingly quiet classroom—only to find Yoon Si-chan inside.

Yoon Si-chan had transferred in about a month ago, at the end of September. His annoyingly clean-cut face made him stand out. A few guys gossiped about how weird it was for someone to transfer in the middle of senior year, with college entrance exams just around the corner.

He was perfect in every way. Rather than being simply good-looking, he had a neat, almost pretty face that made me think he’d be some weak pushover. I assumed he was just another bookworm, but before long, he had made friends with everyone. Not that it was surprising—people were the ones trying to befriend him.

At first, I thought he was just some boring, overly serious bastard because of his expressionless face. But he turned out to be surprisingly playful, laughed often, and even got into fights. On top of that, he had a serious attitude problem. The same guys who used to frown at my rough way of speaking would just laugh no matter what crap Yoon Si-chan said.

The moment he showed up, the whole pecking order flipped. There were rumors that his family was rich, and the guy was good at everything—sports, academics, you name it.

I wished his family would go bankrupt or that he’d get into an accident and have his face scraped off on the asphalt. My own family situation was shit, I didn’t bother with studying, and the only thing I had going for me was my looks.

Until Yoon Si-chan came along, I had been the undisputed best-looking guy around. If it weren’t for him, I still would be. He already had everything, and yet he had to take away the one thing I had, too. It pissed me off just looking at him.

I had tried picking a fight to put him in his place, but I was the only one who got my ass kicked. In front of others, I called it a fight, but anyone who saw my busted-up face next to his untouched one could tell what really happened.

I had hated people all my life, but rarely had I hated anyone as much as Yoon Si-chan.

    That bastard should’ve been dead.

    “Were you bitten?”

Yoon Si-chan asked flatly, gripping a baseball bat from God knows where. At the same time he spoke, he was already striding toward me at an alarming speed.

    “Bitten…? Cough—!”

Do I look like I was bitten, you idiot?

Before I could even get half the words out, my throat was caught in a vice grip. Yoon Si-chan’s hand closed around my neck, giving me no time to struggle before slamming me against the hallway wall.

Even I hadn’t gone this far.

    This guy was completely insane.

The zombies in the distance, busy feasting on someone’s guts, lifted their heads. Noticing them sprinting toward us like rabid dogs, Yoon Si-chan didn’t hesitate—he shoved me back into the classroom and slammed the door shut.

The zombies that had charged forward stopped and sniffed around in confusion, wandering nearby in search of their prey.

Collapsed on the floor, I coughed violently, my heart hammering out of my chest.

When I finally looked up, the lunatic who had just tried to kill me stood there with an infuriatingly calm expression—like nothing had happened.

“You… fuck, are you insane? You crazy bastard!”

I staggered to my feet and grabbed him by the collar. I wanted to kill this bastard right here and now. But he just smacked my hand away without a hint of surprise.

“I had to check if you were bitten.”

The veins on his hand bulged as he gripped the baseball bat. I had already learned the hard way before—there was no way I could beat Yoon Si-chan. Not now, not in this situation. If I made the wrong move, I’d end up as zombie bait or a human shield.

Knowing him, he had probably survived this long by using people as sacrifices, just like I had. If I pushed my luck, I’d just end up getting kicked out of the classroom.

The instinct to survive crushed my pride, forcing me to keep my mouth shut.

Just as Yoon Si-chan opened his mouth to say something, the front door of the classroom swung open without warning.

The face was familiar. Someone from our class.

Crawling inside, sobbing uncontrollably, he hurriedly slammed the door shut and trembled in fear. His face was covered in blood. He panted heavily, eyes darting around, meeting mine for a second before quickly looking away.

    “You… you’re Si-chan, right? Yeah? We’re in the same class…”

His gaze flickered to the baseball bat, and his shoulders hunched. Then, as if completely forgetting about me, he clung to Yoon Si-chan instead.

Yoon Si-chan silently stared at the guy’s bleeding arm.

Looking closer, I saw the bite mark.

    “He’s bitten.”
    “He’s bitten.”

We spoke at the same time, turning to look at each other.

I was going to kick this bastard out or kill him.

And Yoon Si-chan was probably thinking the exact same thing.

Judging by how quickly the school had turned into a complete shitshow, the outside world wasn’t any better.

I had no confidence in surviving alone.

Yoon Si-chan was doing everything he could to stay alive. He was probably thinking the same thing I was.

We both turned our eyes back to the bitten guy.

Kick him out. Kill him. Use him as bait.

Yoon Si-chan and I would always make the same choices.

    “Hey.”

Yoon Si-chan called out in an irritable tone, tapping the broom in my hand with his bat.

It pissed me off, but the truth was, my chances of survival were much higher if I stuck with him. And if the situation ever got desperate, I could always throw him to the zombies instead.

I tapped his baseball bat back with my broom.

A signal of our disgusting alliance.
